Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she joined National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
