McDonald received an 4th Emmy nomination for her role in HBO's special film of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The Bite was a six episode pandemic themed drama produced by Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in the CBS law-and-order thriller The Good Wife, in the year 2009. In the year 2018, she returned to that role in The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a series regular. She received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. She's currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes's historic comedy The Gilded Age.
